GLF Africa 2026

The Horn of Africa Organization for Indigenous People attended GLF Africa 2026 that was held at the CIFOR-ICRAF Campus in Nairobi, Kenya, from 6–7 May 2026. The forum brought together policymakers, researchers, Indigenous leaders, youth representatives, civil society organizations, development partners and private sector stakeholders to discuss sustainable rangeland management and the future of pastoralist communities across Africa.

Key discussions focused on climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable food systems, land governance and the economic importance of Africa’s rangelands. Participants explored ways of restoring degraded landscapes through community-led initiatives, nature-based solutions and stronger environmental policies that support both people and ecosystems.
A major theme throughout the forum was the recognition and integration of Indigenous knowledge systems in conservation and land management practices.

Indigenous communities shared experiences and traditional practices that have supported sustainable grazing systems, water conservation and ecosystem protection for generations. The discussions emphasized that Indigenous knowledge plays a critical role in building climate resilience, protecting biodiversity and promoting inclusive solutions for sustainable development.
The forum also highlighted the importance of youth participation, women’s leadership and multi-stakeholder partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and promoting resilient livelihoods. Through attending the event, the organization gained valuable knowledge, strengthened networks and explored opportunities for collaboration in advancing Indigenous peoples’ rights, environmental sustainability and community resilience across the Horn of Africa region
