Horn of Africa Organization for Indigenous People (HOA-OIP)
Championing the Indigenous Future
About Us
The Horn of Africa Organization for Indigenous People (HOA-OIP), formerly known as the Rural Uplifting Network Agency (RUNA), is a dedicated Non-Governmental Organization working to support and advocate for the rights and well-being of indigenous pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya and across the Horn of Africa.
Established in 2020 as a Community-Based Organization (CBO), HOA-OIP transitioned to a registered National NGO in April 2024 with the NGO Coordination Board. This formal registration underscores the organization's growth and commitment to its mission.

PROGRAMS
1. Community Land Rights
We work to secure indigenous communities’ customary land rights through legal advocacy, documentation of traditional land tenure systems, and support for community-based land management. This includes combating land grabbing and promoting equitable land governance.
2. Climate Justice and resilience
Promoting environmental sustainability and protecting indigenous communities’ access to natural resources. This involves advocating for responsible resource management, addressing the impacts of climate change, and supporting community-based conservation initiatives.
3. Governance and Accountability
Strengthening local governance structures and promoting transparency and accountability in decision-making processes that affect local communities. This includes supporting community participation in local governance and advocating for inclusive policies.
4. Women and Girl Child Empowerment:
Recognising the crucial role of women in Indigenous communities, we promote gender equality and empower women through various initiatives. This includes supporting women’s leadership, promoting their access to education and healthcare, and addressing gender-based violence.
5. Peace conflict resolution and Governance:
Promoting peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution within and between communities. This involves supporting peacebuilding initiatives, promoting inter-community dialogue, and addressing the root causes of conflict, such as resource scarcity and marginalisation.
7. Water Sanitation and Hygiene:
Supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities by promoting access to clean water, supporting sustainable agriculture and pastoralism, and promoting income-generating activities. This includes building water infrastructure, providing training on sustainable farming practices, and supporting the development of local markets.
