Empowering Communities Through Dialogue: Advancing Land Rights in Garse and Godoma Didiqo

With the generous support of the Resource Conflict Institute (RECONCILE), a successful community land dialogue was recently held in Garse Village and Godoma Didiqo, within Godoma Location of Golbo Ward. The forum aimed to engage local residents on critical issues surrounding community land rights and sustainable land management.

The event brought together community members to explore the Community Land Act, its key provisions, and the legal steps necessary for the registration and proper management of community land. A key revelation during the discussions was that many participants had limited knowledge of the Act—highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and public education.

Despite this knowledge gap, the residents responded positively, showing great interest and appreciation for the opportunity to learn. They strongly advocated for continued awareness sessions and consistent follow-up initiatives to deepen their understanding and strengthen their involvement in land governance processes.

The dialogue also revealed the sensitive and multifaceted nature of land issues in the region. Participants emphasized the need for a holistic approach that honors traditional land practices, complies with legal standards, and fosters ongoing community engagement. Such an inclusive approach is essential for preventing conflict and ensuring sustainable land use.

The people of Garse and Godoma Didiqo expressed a strong commitment to maintaining dialogue and working collaboratively. Their dedication underscores the vital role of education, community ownership, and transparent governance in protecting land rights and promoting peaceful, inclusive development.
