OUR HISTORY
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Horn of Africa Organization for Indigenous People (HOA-OIP), formerly known as the Rural Uplifting Network Agency (RUNA), is a dedicated Non-Governmental Organization working to support and advocate for the rights and well-being of indigenous pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya and across the Horn of Africa.
Established in 2020 as a Community-Based Organization (CBO), HOA-OIP transitioned to a registered National NGO in April 2024 with the NGO Coordination Board. This formal registration underscores the organization’s growth and commitment to its mission.

The organization adopts a holistic approach, understanding the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental factors in achieving sustainable and meaningful change.
HOA-OIP has received public acclaim for its impactful work in these areas, demonstrating its effectiveness in empowering communities and driving positive change. The organization’s commitment to partnership, holistic approaches, and focus on key development areas positions it as a vital advocate for indigenous communities in the Horn of Africa.
